| A Small Bump in the Road... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Looks like we hit one of those bumps in the road the doctors told us about... During our clinic visit last Friday, the doctor noticed that Jordan's liver was slightly larger than it was during the previous clinic visit. She then ordered an echo and noticed that his heart wall around the left ventricle was slightly thicker than indicated in previous tests. She explained to us that these could be early signs of rejection, and that such episodes are common 3-8 weeks after the transplant. Aside from what the doctor noticed, Jordan had no other symptoms and appeared to be doing just fine. He grew a quarter inch more and gained another 2 ounces. They did not do a heart biopsy to confirm, opting to treat it as definite signs of early rejection. Jordan was admitted to the hospital that night to be put on high doses of steroids for three days to regress any rejection process that might be underway. The transplant team communicated to us that such episodes are expected and appeared confident that this treatment would resolve the rejection. Though it was very upsetting to have a clinic visit result in a hospital stay, we tried to take the doctor's lead and not make ourselves crazy with worry. Sadaf and I stayed in the hospital with him over the weekend and continued to take care of him as if we were home. The weekend was rather uneventful otherwise - we spent much of the time just playing with him, catching up on sleep, and watching TV. On Monday, they did another echo and EKG to confirm that those signs of rejection had regressed, and indeed they had. He also gained some more weight and now tips the scales at 8 pounds 14 ounces! We were discharged at approximately 1 p.m. and took Jordan home. He will remain on higher doses of steroids at home for the next week, and will resume his normal discharge amount by next Monday. This certainly was a wake-up call for us. Ever since they found a donor heart, it had been an uphill ride. Even the meds we give him everyday became a routine part of his care and, because he is doing so well, we'd sometimes forget that he actually had a heart transplant. It was a bump in the road, albeit a small one, and we can never take for granted that there will not be larger ones down the road. But we will continue to take it day by day and do our best to make sure Jordan can make the most out of his second chance at life As always, we thank you all for your continued support. Please continue to check in on Jordan and keep him, and the baby whose heart now beats inside him, in your thoughts and prayers. New pictures coming soon! - Jeff (3/1/05) |
